AEnigma

For this exhibition, Audrey Guttman created an interactive installation that paid homage to the rhizomatic quality of the enigma. Taking to heart Chirico’s appropriation of Nietzsche’s maxim, she sought to formalise the intoxicating process of layering question upon question, generating an expanding labyrinth. Her aim was to materialise the lived experience of inquiry: each thought leading to another, forming rhizomes and pathways, hitting dead ends, turning back, sprouting anew. The result was an active chessboard on which visitors were invited to play the bishop, letting their gaze progress along diagonal lines until it reached one of eight numbered exits. These corresponded to as many poems on the opposite wall, each with a page on which to reply to the poem addressed to the Munich oracle.
